St. Thomas of Hereford and St. Bede, the Venerable Churches, both have Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EHMC) who are recommissioned annually.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass
The minister serves Christ, present in the assembly, by ministering his Body and Blood to their brothers and sisters.
Ministry to the Sick and Housebound
The ministers also serve the community by taking Communion to those members who are prevented by sickness, old age, or other causes from taking part in the gathering for Mass.
Celebration of the Word & Communion in the absence of a Priest
Where the community has the service of a Deacon, he will preside at these liturgies. EMHC’s as lay members of the community, proclaim the scripture readings before the Gospel. They may also announce the intentions for prayer in the general intercessions and assist in distributing Holy Communion.
To be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, candidates must be:
- A fully initiated Catholic (made the Sacrament of Confirmation)
- Be in good standing with the Church
- Be of good moral standing and cultivate devotion to the Holy Eucharist
- Distinguish themselves by Christian life, faith and morals, constantly striving to be worthy of this ministry
- Participate regularly in the sacramental life of the Church
- Be duly instructed, receiving sufficient spiritual, theological and practical preparation
- Act as an example to others by piety and reverence for this Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
